Established in 1956, Beijing You’an Hospital is attached to & the 9th Clinical Hospital of the Capital University of Medical Science. It’s a Grade-III Class-A hospital of the Ministry of Health. It serves as the training base of the Ministry of Health for advanced studies of physicians in infectious diseases, training base of China Disease Prevention & Control Center for physicians in AIDS, as well as base of National Administration for Traditional Chinese Medicine for infectious disease and AIDS treatment using traditional Chinese medicine. It has nearly 30 cooperative hospitals across the country. It acts as a director organization of the Infectious Disease Administration Branch of the first Chinese Administration Society for Hospitals, and Care & Treatment Working Commission of China Venereal Disease & AIDS Prevention & Cure Association. It’s mainly engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of 36 notified diseases excluding tuberculosis. It’s a comprehensive hospital integrating medical science, teaching, research and prevention, and specialized in infectious diseases.

The Hospital covers a land area of 52280 square meters, and a building area of 48246 square meters, with 550 open ward beds (the new outpatient building and respiratory disease ward building, with a total area of 28000 square meters, are being constructed. There will be 750 open beds after the reconstruction and expansion). The Hospital is strongly staffed with technical persons. 87% staffs are professional technicians. There are more than 100 persons with high-ranking professional titles, 100 over graduates with Doctor’s/Master’s Degree, nearly 30 tutors for graduate students of Doctor’s/Master’s Degree, and nearly 20 trans-century excellent talents of Beijing, Science & Technology stars of Beijing, experts with outstanding contribution, and experts enjoying governmental special subsidies. The Hospital is provided with a reasonably structured team of young, middle-aged and aged professionals who can meet the need of development of medical science in the 21st century. Experts at home and from US and UK and other countries are invited to form a team of visiting professors.

The Hospital attaches importance to academic building. Since 1980s, it has built an operating idea to become “a small comprehensive hospital within a special range”. It has established the Department of Hepatopathy-Gastroenterology, Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Department of Hepatopathy-Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Department of Hepatopathy-Oncology etc. Its hepatopathy treatment with combined traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine becomes the key subject of Beijing. Upon approval, it has established the Beijing Clinical Diagnosis & Treatment Center for Venereal Diseases and AIDS, Beijing Training Center for Artificial Liver Treatment, Beijing Endoscopic Diagnosis & Treatment Center for Hepatopathy, Beijing Consultation Center for Difficult Hepatopathy and Gallbladder Diseases With Combined Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. It has also founded the Sino-US Cooperative Center for Liver Transplantation, You’an Hospital Liver Transplantation Center, and You’an Hospital Tumor Intervention Center. Presently, the Hospital has built the unique integrated treatment mode of “comprehensive internal medicine – artificial liver support – liver transplantation” to treat various hepatic diseases and hepatitis. It has also developed and made its own traditional Chinese preparations which have distinct curative effect to benefit the extensive hepatic disease patients.

You’an Hospital has established a non-governmental organization of care for AIDS/HIV patients – “Home of Love”, and a “Happy Home for Hepatopathy Patients”. The Hospital is provided with perfect lab test and auxiliary treatment measures for hepatopathy and infectious diseases. It has founded AIDS, SARS, combined traditional Chinese and western medicine, and other key labs. More than ten new technologies and operations in the Hospital such as hospital infection management has become the country-level continuing education projects.

A person-centered management idea can be seen in all works. The Hospital develops by using science and education. It vigorously conducts research of new technology. It has undertaken some major research tasks such as the 863 Project and other task of Beijing Science & Technology Commission. It conducts technical cooperation with Italy, US and UK in several research projects. It has organized several country-level continuing education projects for infectious diseases; published dozens of monographs, and standard training materials about infectious diseases for national medical workers, published more than one thousand academic papers on core periodicals. Dozens of experts hold academic posts for province- and ministry-level academic periodicals.

For long, You’an people have been carrying forward the “realistic, dedicative, exquisite and innovative” spirit, advocating the humanistic philosophy of “bless each other’s safety”, with striking results achieved in the physical and ideological civilization drives. It won consecutively the title of “National Advanced Unit in Health System”, “Beijing Model Unit for Advance Culture and Ideology”; in the fight against SARS in 2003, all medical workers in the Hospital faced the music, healed the wounded and rescued the dying, winning the honorable titles such as “National May Day Labor Diploma”, and “National March Eighth Red Flag Collective”. Secretary General Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao visited the Hospital for guidance, giving great care and encouragement to the workers in the Hospital.

In its 11th Five-Year Plan, the Hospital sets forth new strategic orientation and service purpose. It will strive to realize six strategic changes: from sole infectious diseases to contagious and infectious diseases; from focusing on diseases to serving the people; from sole medical service to integration of prevention, medical service, health care and rehabilitation; from solely pursuing to social and financial benefits to the aim of offering high-quality service for the society; from sole medical rescue and treatment to a group building public health prevention and control system; and from a special hospital to a comprehensive special hospital.
We firmly believe that, through efforts of every member of the Hospital, we will surely build our hospital into a research- and innovation-oriented, resource-saving and human-harmonious hospital that is satisfied and secure to the people, and eventually into a modern special hospital of infectious disease at international level to stand erectly in the world.
